Solar Energy

The energy from the sun can be classified in two forms: (1) heat or thermal energy, and (2)
light energy. There are two basic technologies to utilize the solar energy.

Solar thermal technologies use the sun's heat energy to heat substances such as space
heating, pool heating and water heating for homes and businesses. Solar thermal
collectors are designed to convert the thermal energy from the sun to electricity or
mechanical energy. Usually, it is mounted on the roof of a building or in some sunny
locations.

Photovoltacis (PV; light electricity), a semiconductor-based technology, converts light
energy directly into an electric current that can either be sued immediately or stored for
later use. Photovoltaic panels/modules are also commonly mounted on the roof or awning
of a building, on roadside emergency phones etc. They can also be integrated into building
materials such as PV shingles.
