The newest Madden NFL game and Nintendo Wii
offerings lead sales of video games for the third
quarter.  The top five popular games are[1]:

1. Madden NFL 09

2. Wii Fit, Nintendo

3. The Force Unleashed, LucasArts

4. Pokemon Platinum, Nintendo

5. Mario Kart Wii, Nintendo

Animal Crossing
Couples of years ago, many people racing home
from work night after night to set aside reality
and visit the world of Animal Crossing on
Nintendo GameCube. In 2005, Nintendo launched
out Animal Crossing: Wild World. It's a 3D
scrolling mini-globe and implemented with all-
new music! Now, it has Animal Crossing: City
Folk. In City Folk, you have a bus take you to a
downtown "city."

Sporty Games

Electronic Arts has announced EA Sports Active,
available in spring 2009. The product is aimed at
women seeking a simple and inexpensive way to
achieve a healthy lifestyle. Nintendo’s own
fitness product for Wii offers a not so rigorous
workout. EA Sports offers a more strenuous
program. [2]

"Sports Active" includes a wide variety of
interactive activities presented as virtual circuit
training for both upper and lower body as well as
cardiovascular workouts, according to
Electronic Arts. [3]

Kris Pigna from PC Magazine wrote that
platform holders in the videogames industry
tend to lose money on their hardware (at least
for the first couple of years) while making
money through software. However, according to
an estimate by analysts at Macquarie Securities
(via Forbes), Nintendo actually makes $6 in
profit for every Wii they sell. [4]

On the other hand, Microsoft said sales of its
Xbox 360 gaming and entertainment console
increased 25% on Black Friday (2008) compared
with last year's post-Thanksgiving shopping
binge, and outpaced sales of rival Sony's
PlayStation 3 system 3 to 1.  [5]

Microsoft executive Shane Kim said that the
“video game business is on track to grow by
20% this year”, but that result may not be
achievable in 2009 and he indicated that
Microsoft may be aiming for flat growth next
year. [6]
